Quantum Engineering Seminar

Quantum Engineering Seminar

Unless specified otherwise, all seminars will take place in CoorsTek 282 on Wednesday 9-9:50 AM.

08/27, Robert Kent, Qblox

Senior Quantum Success Engineer
Enhancing Superconducting Qubit Readout

In this talk, I will describe the process of superconducting qubit readout and review both traditional and recent machine learning methods used to improve the fidelity of qubit state discrimination. I will then present a fast, accurate, scalable, and adaptable alternative that I developed during my Ph.D. at The Ohio State University. In the second part of the talk, I will discuss Qblox, their fully integrated quantum control stack, and how it supports enhanced qubit readout.

Bio: Robert is currently a Senior Quantum Success Engineer at Qblox, where he teaches customers how to use Qblox’s fully integrated quantum control stack and ensures their success in experiments. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from The Ohio State University, where he studied machine learning, FPGA programming, nonlinear control, and the readout of superconducting and neutral atom qubits.

Company bio: Qblox is a global leader in scalable quantum control stacks and has recently expanded its U.S. presence with a new headquarters in Boston to provide closer support throughout North America.

Papers:
Superconducting Qubit Readout Using Next-Generation Reservoir Computing
Efficient measurement of neutral-atom qubits with matched filters
Controlling chaos using edge computing hardware

09/03, John Neer, Aerospace Consultant

John Neer, retired aerospace engineer, will be teaching what he learned from personally attending hundreds of hours of Richard Feynman’s lectures. Come by to hear his perspective! Snacks and coffee provided.

09/10, Dr. Florent Lecocq, NIST

Our speaker this week will be Dr. Florent Lecocq. He is a research scientist working in the Advanced Microwave Photonics group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado. This group develops technologies for quantum measurements and quantum information science based around superconducting circuits. Some examples of their focus areas are high-speed parametric qubit gates and microwave opto-mechanical devices. Snacks and coffee provided.
Join us in McNeil 213 or on Zoom.

09/17, Career days, no seminar

09/24, Phoenix Dai, FormFactor Inc.

Our speaker 9/24 is Phoenix Dai, a Quantum Business Development Specialist for FormFactor Inc. FormFactor specializes in producing technologies to measure and validate integrated circuits, including quantum cryogenic management tools. We will have the usual snacks and coffee!

10/01, No Quantum Engineering Seminar

10/08, Maxime Malnou, Senior Research Fellow at NIST

Dr. Maxime Malnou, a Senior Research Fellow in the Advanced Microwave Photonics Group at NIST, does work on traveling-wave parametric amplifiers.

10/15, Joe Aumentado, Physicist at NIST

Dr. José Aumentado, a physicist at NIST, has led the Advanced Microwave Photonics Group for 8 years. His current work focuses on superconducting parametric circuits.

10/29, Nathan Arnold, CEO of Photon Queue

Nathan Arnold, CEO of Photon Queue. Photon Queue is a quantum hardware company focused on building memories to store and synchronize photonic qubits.

If you’re interested in how to spin a start-up out of university research (Photon Queue spun out of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign!) or have questions about entrepreneurship, this will be a fantastic seminar to attend!

Though the speaker will be virtual, the usual snacks and coffee will be provided in person.

Recording

11/5, Brendan Paver, Advanced Optical Engineer, Quantinuum

We are excited to welcome Brendan Paver, a Mines graduate (B.S. Engineering Physics 2020) who now works as an Advanced Optical Engineer at Quantinuum. His talk will focus on the importance of photonic technologies in scaling ion-trap quantum computers, including a discussion about testing metasurfaces and the use of integrated photonic circuits for precisely guiding lasers to ions.
